ChangMooKwan TaeKwonDo
Tae Kwon Do is an art formulated in Korea following the Second World War and based on centuries of Korean practices. Tae Kwon Do (Taekwondo) is an art with both modern and ancient roots.
In 1992, Tae Kwon Do became an official Olympic sport, propelling it into the fastest growth of any martial art in the 21st Century.
Since that time, it has evolved into two distinct types of practice: Olympic Sport and martial art.
Sport: Sport Taekwondo offers students the opportunity to build athleticism, discover the joys of competition, develop concentration and to be a part of the Olympic dream. Do Shim Mudo values these benefits. We currently offer Olympic style training for competitive and amateur athletes on a private coaching basis. In the near future, Do Shim Mudo looks forward to helping NYC's youth become a more significant part of the Olympic Dream through our Do Shim Foundation, a not-for-profit aimed at specifically bringing the Olympic dream to inner city youth. If you would like more information on this program, please email us.
Art: Do Shim Mudo's lineage traces back to the Chang Moo Kwan (House of Martial Development) as founded by Byung In Yoon. As such Do Shim utilizes Tae Kwon Do's explosive kicks and effective hand techniques as a means to efficiently develop our students' character, physical fitness levels, self-defense skills and to elevate our sense of balance and peace of mind. Following our heritage, we are committed to the martial arts pursuit of "the way". Grounded in self-defense and inseparable from the integration of the body, mind and spirit, our Tae Kwon Do program will provide you with a path, "the way", to enhance your life and daily activities.
Lineage
Chang Moo Kwan
Byung In Yoon began teaching at the YMCA in Seoul Korea during the 1940's. His senior student, Nam Suk Lee, officially founded the ChangMooKwan. Byung In Yoon had studied Chu'an Fa in Manchuria (Kwon Bop in Korean) and later studied with Kanchen Toyoma in Japan. Toyama founded the Shudokan and is listed among the Shudokan Shihan. Following the Korean War, Byung In Yoon was left missing and his dojang continued under Nam Suk Lee. In the early 1970's the ChangMooKwan unified with the other existing schools to form the Kukkiwon. Joining with the Kukkiwon eventually brought with it the advent of sport Taekwondo. However, many teachers and students have also held on to the style of practice from the original kwans. Here at Do Shim Mudo we hold true to the classical methods of practice while giving interested students the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport.
Do Shim Mudo is proud to be affiliated with the following traditional and sport governing bodies: the World Taekwondo Federation, USA Taekwondo, the International Shotokai Federation. and the United States Taekwondo Commission.
